In Barbados, any vehicle operating on public roads is required by law to have insurance. Failure to abide by this requirement could result in a fine of $1,000 and up to six months imprisonment, or both. Additionally, driving without being insured against third party risks may disqualify you from holding or obtaining a license for a period of 12 months from the conviction date.
Beyond being mandatory, having insurance provides peace of mind to drivers. Unfortunately, accidents can and do happen. When you know that you’re financially protected, it helps save some of the stress from an already tense situation.
Barbados Motor Insurance
At General Accident, we offer two types of motor insurance policies for Barbadian drivers: Third Party and Comprehensive. Without insurance, not only are you in direct violation of the law, but you’re also liable for all damages to others and their property which may total thousands of dollars.
Depending on the level of protection you’re looking for, we can help you determine which plan is right for you. Here’s a brief overview of each and what they offer:
Our Third Party policy is an affordable option that, at the very least, helps keep other drivers protected if an at-fault collision happens. While it is our cheapest car insurance, the Third Party policy does not include any of the extra benefits offered by our Comprehensive Insurance plan.
In Barbados, Third Party insurance will suffice as the legally required minimum coverage for motor vehicles.
General Accident Comprehensive Insurance policyholders enjoy a selection of added benefits on top of the baseline protections that are offered.
When you choose our Comprehensive policy, you get access to:
Replacement Vehicle Hire
Your policy automatically provides a hired vehicle of a similar type for a period of 7 days if your vehicle cannot be driven because of a collision. If you wish, you can pay an additional premium to extend coverage to 28 days.
Windscreen Damage
This coverage allows you to claim for a broken windscreen or window glass, up to a maximum of two claims in one policy period. Your existing No Claim Discount will not be affected by any windscreen damage claims made.
Medical Expenses
The policy will cover medical expenses for the Insured or any Authorized Driver, up to a limit specified in your policy schedule in the case of an accident.
Legal Charges (Manslaughter)
Vehicular manslaughter is every driver’s worst nightmare. However, if it does happen, your policy provides a maximum of $100,000.00 to defend against charges.
Personal Accident
This provides coverage for the Insured and Passengers of the vehicle for personal injury resulting in death or permanent injuries.
Clothing & Personal Effects
In the event of an incident, coverage is provided for loss of or damage to clothing and personal effects* whilst in the vehicle, up to a limit specified in your policy schedule. (*excludes money, jewellery and articles including motor accessories and samples carried in connection with any trade or business)
Flood & Special Perils
Coverage is extended to include damage caused by natural disasters and civil unrest, such as:
