Top players gear up for General Accident Open Amateur Tennis Championships
-

Some of the island’s top amateur players will vie for championship honours when they compete in the General Accident Open Tennis Championships, scheduled for the Liguanea Club from today through to next Saturday.

Top-seeded players including Donovan Crumbie, Jeremy Miller, Vincent Williams and Matthew Rodriguez are some of the players already confirmed for Class One, while those confirmed in Class Two include Stephen Shirley, Barry Hazel, Lloyd Nelson and Stephen Todd.

The week-long tournament is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am and continues nightly during the week. The finals of the championship will be played next Saturday at 3:00 pm, followed by a presentation ceremony.

Players will compete in the men’s Classes One, Two and Three, and the ladies Open categories. There will be a special intercol event, in which players attending universities and colleges will be invited to participate.

Tournament director Llockett McGregor said the week-long tournament will be an exciting one in which the players will get an opportunity to execute their skills that will help to prepare them for future local and international tournaments.

“Our local players are doing very well and we hope that this tournament will help to sharpen their skills for future tournaments. We anticipate a good performance from the players as usual,” McGregor said.

Andrea Muir-Gibbs, broker services manager, General Accident Insurance Company Limited, said her organisation was pleased to partner again with the Llockett McGregor Tennis Series for the second year.

“We are looking forward to an exciting tournament. These players will have the opportunity to match their skills against some of the island’s top players and we are looking forward to the friendly rivalry that will ensue,” Muir-Gibbs said.
