The General Accident/Liguanea Club Open Tennis Championships survived bad weather and an earthquake to finish two days after the scheduled conclusion. The tennis tournament, which has been sponsored by General Accident for over a decade, was hampered by rain during consecutive afternoon sessions which delayed the finals until Monday, October 30th.
Jamaica was then hit by an earthquake on Monday morning which forced a second delay until Tuesday.
The Men’s Open final produced the match of the tournament as Jeremy Miller overcame Dwayne Pagon 7-5, 5-7, 10-5 in a gruelling three-set tiebreaker. It was the first time that Miller, a representative of Liguanea Club, won the tournament.
Miller got one break to take the first set 7-5 and seemed on the way to winning the match in straight sets until the veteran Pagan responded to win the second set 7-5, as well sending the match into a ten-point tiebreak.
Miller then got out to an early lead in the tiebreak and was able to hold the advantage to claim his first victory in his “home” tournament.
In Men’s Class 2, Seth Grennell beat Kyle Millwood in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
In the Men’s Class 3, Bryan Robinson was declared the winner over Runner-Up Lavois Cruickshank 3-6, 2-2 retired.
Shea-Ann Kameka prevailed as the Women’s Open champion with a straight-sets 6-4, 6-4 win over Pauline Hylton while Brigitte Foster-Hylton took the Women’s Amateur Open over Simone Hudson, also in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
The prize for the Most Improved and upset of the tournament went to Brian Lumley.
ShaVaughn Rattigan of General Accident was happy that the tournament had a successful end despite the challenges.
“General Accident has been sponsoring the Liguanea Club for over 12 years. We were expecting a smooth flow of tennis, but that didn’t work out. We are thankful, however, for the exciting and nail-biting finish between Miller and Pagan. They certainly entertained the crowd in the men’s singles final. It was top-class tennis,” he said.
General Accident has been supporting the sport of tennis and the development of Liguanea Club for more than a decade, helping to refurbish at least three of the courts during that time.
