General Accident’s Enduring Support: Fueling Dunrobin Primary School’s Vision
-

Kingston, Jamaica: Dunrobin Primary School's Principal, Sacheel Grant Henry has a clear vision for the school currently in her charge. The 16-year educator longs for the popular institution to boast as a standard bearer for primary education.

In a positive reflection of the vision being within reach, the school welcomed several corporate and non-profit groups to share with children the joys of reading on May 7, 2024, as the National Read Across Jamaica Day got underway.

Though well supported, for Grant Henry a notable longstanding partner for the national initiative has been General Accident Insurance Company.

The relationship which began over five years ago while Grant Henry was then Principal of Drew’s Avenue Primary continues to grow in strength.

“The relationship started at my previous school Drews Avenue Primary and because they were such great team players at GenAc/ Autosmart, I thought it necessary, to invite them to come on board with us at Dunrobin Primary School. There was no hesitation towards that. So the truth is, in terms of the relationship between us and GenAc/ Autosmart, it has become somewhat of a love relationship, almost a complete marriage, especially as it relates to Read Across Jamaica Day,” Grant Henry explained.

“GenAc/ Autosmart is one of the groups that we can depend on and even if we don't send an invitation, in fact, they reach out to us at Dunrobin Primary School. We can always count on a full contingent of you know, persons coming over to Dunrobin. So it has been an excellent relationship we're hoping to extend even further, you know, in partnership, but for now, it's an excellent relationship, especially for Read Across Jamaica Day,” Grant Henry continued.

Leading the charge for educational initiatives at GenAc is Managing Director, Sharon Donaldson.

“Read Across Jamaica Day is an initiative that is close to the hearts of the staff at General Accident. One of our key pillar areas of community support is education and Dunrobin has been one of our adopted schools for over three years. We understand the power of reading and engaging with children and the lasting impact it can have on their lives. In our time together we’ve built strong relationships with students and staff at Dunrobin Primary and we have every intention of expanding our support to other areas of need,” Donaldson shared.

In another show of exemplary stewardship, Read Across Jamaica Day was made an even more whimsical experience as students and teachers had the opportunity to dress as their favourite book characters. An apt idea used to amplify the excitement of the day.

“This is the brainchild of one of our teachers, Miss Rochelle Panton, she came to me with the idea of what we call dress like a book character day. You may have realized that it's not just the children, but a few teachers, too, are dressed in the costume. The idea is for persons to select their favourite story character, and dress like the person to come to school and the children love it,” Grant Henry shared.

Though her eyes were originally set on being a lawyer, Grant Henry cherishes her role as a Principal.

“I was going to go to law school, but that just never materialized. So here I am in education. Still, I am loving it. Yes, it's difficult. School leadership is hard but I have an excellent relationship with the children so they make it fun for me.”

Now Grant Henry is focused on her young ladies and gentlemen, as she dubs them, to exceed their expectations.

“My vision for Dunrobin Primary School is to maintain it as a standard brand in primary education, to get it to a place where it is spoken of at all times. The vision also includes a concept of every lady and gentleman because I do call them ladies and gentlemen here. So for every lady and gentleman to understand that you are a global citizen, you can succeed, you can do well,” Grant Henry shared.

Outside of the ongoing Read Across Jamaica activities, General Accident and their team make regular contributions to the Dunrobin Primary.  “We are proud to be a part of the school’s external family and reiterate our commitment for years to come,” GenAc Managing Director Sharon Donaldson added.
