General Accident Champions Youth Development at McKenley/Wint Track and Field Classic
KINGSTON, JAMAICA: General Accident Insurance Company (GenAc) proudly reaffirmed its commitment to youth development and sportsmanship as a major sponsor of the 10th annual McKenley/Wint Track and Field Classic, held at Calabar High School last weekend.
The event, named in honour of Calabar alumni and Jamaican Olympic legends Herb McKenley and Arthur Wint, attracted over 2,000 athletes from 53 schools, competing in events such as the 400m hurdles, 1500m, 100m, sprint hurdles, and 400m.
Speaking at the Meet, Kimone Gardner, Assistant Underwriting Manager at General Accident, emphasised the significance of the company’s sponsorship.
“General Accident continues to be proud sponsors of the McKenley/Wint Track and Field Classic because it aligns with our commitment to promoting youth development, health, wellness, and community engagement.”
“Track and field is not just about competition—it’s about discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, values that resonate deeply with our company culture. By supporting this prestigious event, we aim to encourage young athletes to reach their full potential while fostering a sense of unity and pride within the community.”
As a major sponsor, GenAc provided liability insurance up to JMD$5,000,000 and a cash injection of $250,000.00 along with hosting of a VVIP booth for the event.
Gardner, who handed over a sponsorship cheque believes that their involvement in the event has also contributed to the development of the student athletes beyond the track
“Additionally, we recognize the importance of investing in sports initiatives that inspire the next generation of leaders, both on and off the track. Through our sponsorship, we hope to contribute to the continued growth and success of this event and the athletes involved.”
Darren Laidlaw, a member of the organizing committee for the Meet spoke of the impact of the contribution of General Accident to the success of the event over the years and especially in 2025.
“General Accident has become a stable partner for the McKenley/Wint Track and Field Classic for the past few years. Their contributions have ensured our meet remains safe and secure for all our participating athletes, volunteers and patrons for the entire duration of the meet.
“This year saw a significant increase in their contribution, which ensures that we were able to provide a first class VVIP lounge for our special guests and sponsors. We look forward to working with General Accident for 2026 when we expect an even bigger and better McKenley/Wint Classic.”
In addition to its sponsorship of the McKenley/Wint Classic, General Accident is a proud supporter of other youth sports initiatives, including the Gibson McCook Relays and Likkle Swimmers, a transformative swimming programme based in the picturesque community of Treasure Beach.
