GenAc’s Emancipendence Celebration: Uniting Team Members Through the Arts
Kingston, Jamaica:
General Accident Insurance Company (GenAc) recently hosted its highly anticipated “Crocs Up: Emancipendence Celebration” at the company’s Kingston office, an event that brought together team members in a vibrant display of unity and cultural pride. The event, held on Friday, August 9, 2024, was a testament to GenAc’s commitment to fostering a positive and engaging work environment through creative expression and the arts.
The celebration featured a variety of activities, including an inspiring live concert where GenAc’s talented staff members took centre stage, showcasing their skills in singing, dancing, and the visual arts. The event’s theme, “Jamaica: A Journey Through the Years,” was brought to life through three captivating acts that reflected the past, present, and future of Jamaican culture.
A Culture of Engagement and Celebration
Lesley Miller, Chief Information Officer at GenAc, highlighted the value of non-work activities for enhancing staff morale and building a sense of community. “Engaging the staff in such activities definitely raises morale. It’s not all about work; we want our team to feel appreciated and involved. This Emancipendence Celebration exemplifies how we foster an environment where employees can showcase their talents and connect more deeply,” Miller noted.
The event was live streamed to GenAc’s teams in Montego Bay, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados, ensuring that the celebration’s energy and spirit resonated throughout the company’s regional offices. Miller added, Happy team members lead to happy clients, and events like these help build the strong, supportive culture that is central to GenAc’s success.
Celebrating Jamaican Heritage Through the Arts
A highlight of the event was the performance by the GenAc Staff Choir, led by Jamion Baker, who has been the choir director for nearly three years. Under Baker’s direction, the choir has grown from a one-time initiative to a staple of GenAc’s cultural events, performing at various internal and external occasions.
“The depth of talent within GenAc is remarkable,” said Baker. “Our choir, which includes singers, DJs, instrumentalists, poets, and dancers, reflects the diversity and creativity of the GenAc team. The success of the choir is a testament to the dedication and passion of the team members, who come together to create something truly special.”
A Day of Creativity and Connection
The “Crocs Up” theme added a playful element to the day, with team members competing for the most stylish Crocs design. The winner Rasneash Matthews, who adorned her Crocs with “diamonds and pearls” jibbitz, exemplified the creativity that the event encouraged. The day also featured art displays by staff members, showcasing their talents in painting, charcoal drawing, and more.
Evelyn Frazer from Corporate Services, who helped organise the event, noted, “We really enjoy spending time together in this way. It’s a great opportunity to connect, have fun, and celebrate our culture. All of this is done outside of work hours, showing our team’s passion and commitment to making these events a success.”
GenAc’s Emancipendence Celebration is more than just an event; it’s a reflection of the company’s values and its dedication to creating a workplace where employees feel valued, engaged, and connected. By embracing the arts and celebrating Jamaican heritage, GenAc continues to build a strong and vibrant corporate culture.
