Four Myths about Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles are increasing in popularity in Jamaica. Whether you want to save money on fuel, are concerned about the environment, or looking for a change, electric vehicles are a viable option. While doing your research and chatting with your peers, you might have heard many myths about electric cars and some of them may have scared you. Here are five electric vehicle myths:
Myth 1: It takes too long to charge
The rate at which your car will charge depends on the size of the battery, the speed of the charging port as well as the car model and manufacturer.
In Jamaica, there are two available types of charging ports; the semi-fast or Level 2/AC charger and the super-fast or level 3/DC charger.
The Level 2/AC station takes about two and a half hours to charge your EV battery to 80%. The Level 3/DC station can charge your electric vehicle’s battery to 80% in less than 45 minutes. Charging time varies depending on the type of car.
Private cars spend most of the time parked – at home or at work. If there is an available port near to home or work, charging your EV does not present a challenge.
Myth 2: EV charging is expensive
Tired of complaining about gas prices? Charging your electric car can save you 25-35 percent in fuel costs compared to diesel and gasoline.
Myth 3: Electric vehicles are slow and give bad performance
In the past, electric vehicles had a slightly lower top speed than gas-fueled vehicles but nowadays that’s not the case.
Since electric vehicles don’t have transmissions, they actually accelerate faster than gas-fueled cars and their performance rivals gas-fueled cars in terms of horsepower and torque.
Myth 4: Electric vehicles are hard to insure in Jamaica
You can insure your electric vehicle with ease in Jamaica.
General Accident Insurance has an e-vehicle policy for your electric or hybrid car.
To insure your electric vehicle with us, you have to be between ages 21-70, have your driver’s license for more than a year, and use your vehicle only for personal use.
Whether you’re considering an electric vehicle for your first car or thinking of trading in your current car for an electric car, make sure you’re well-informed before you make a decision.
