Committed to raising breast cancer awareness

GenAc celebrates 3+ years of Jamaica Cancer Society Partnership

Kingston, Jamaica: General Accident Insurance Company (GenAc) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to raising awareness for breast cancer with a $100,000 donation to the Jamaica Cancer Society. Continuing to live up to its core values of responsibility and empathy, GenAc celebrates over three years of dedicated partnership with the non-profit organization.

Chief Information Officer at GenAc, Lesley Miller explained the importance of the commitment to the Jamaica Cancer Society, “For GenAc, this cause reflects our core values of corporate social responsibility. It allows us to show our empathy and commitment to making a lasting impact on the lives of our fellow countrymen. We believe it is our duty to cultivate a sustainable environment and contribute positively to our communities while futureproofing tomorrow.”

The Jamaica Cancer Society is known locally as the leading organization providing vital support for Cervical, Breast, and Prostate cancer.  Since 2022 the popular general insurance company has donated a cumulative $336,000 to the Society.

As part of its long-standing support of the breast cancer awareness initiative, the insurance company has also been a mainstay participant in the ICWI Pink Run for over a decade. For this year’s staging of the run held at the famous Emancipation Park on October 27, patrons came out in numbers to endorse the cause and GenAc was no exception. In a public show of support, GenAc maintained an impactful presence with 57 participants, 52 of them being staff members.

“The impact of breast cancer is far-reaching. As a company, GenAc considers key awareness events like the Pink Run as an integral element in the sensitization efforts and our team is always excited to contribute to the cause and participate,” Miller added.

Upon receiving the $100,000 donation from GenAc, Acting Executive Director of the Jamaica Cancer Society, Michael Leslie acknowledged the rising demand for cancer assistance and the success of the corporate entities in bolstering awareness of the initiative, Leslie added, “The numbers have increased because more and more people are being diagnosed with cancer and more people are becoming aware of the need to test,” Leslie shared.

He went on to express gratitude to the general insurer for its continued support,  “When you come on board with the [Jamaica] Cancer Society, what you are doing at General Accident is helping us to create awareness and helping those who cannot afford to be screened. There are a lot of persons who want to be screened and just can’t afford it because they don’t have the resources. As a Cancer Society, we try to help some of these people. So, when a team like General Accident comes on board, that is what you are doing… Again thanks and we appreciate your input.”

Jamaica Reach to Recovery started the Pink Run in October 2000 after becoming aware of their members’ financial burden when accessing life-saving tests and treatments. This annual donation is part of GenAc’s ongoing commitment to the Jamaica Cancer Society’s mission of improving the quality of life for individuals battling cancer.

Pink Run is aligned with Jamaica Reach to Recovery’s mandate to improve the quality of life for women diagnosed with and/or who have survived breast cancer and their families through a wide range of services.  The proceeds of the Pink Run provide life-saving support for people with breast cancer and their families.
